REUTERS INDIA | MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia’s Communists expect the global financial crisis will cause social unrest and help them challenge for power, the party’s leader said on Saturday.
Gennady Zyuganov told the party’s annual congress the Communists should make maximum use of the growing public discontent caused by the economic downturn to try to restore their political strength.
“The wind of history is blowing in our sails again … At this time of crisis the world of imperialism is starting to die. We are standing on the threshold of political and social shifts,” Zyuganov said in a 2-hour speech opening the congress.
Russia’s Communists ruled the Soviet Union for eight decades and remained a major opposition force for several years after the collapse of the Soviet Union at the end of 1991.
But the party has since lost much of its authority and many analysts say it is too weak to seriously challenge for power.
The Russian authorities are trying to minimise the impact of the financial crisis by promising billions of dollars of state aid. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has pledged higher social payments to the needy and lower taxes for business.
“The authorities are clearly not coping with managing the country … A mass social protest is brewing and it is hard to predict now when and in what shape it will explode,” Zyuganov said.>>>>Read the Full Article

Russia has never shaken its collectivist trends from its political morality. Communism, like evil, always seem to be lingering for an opportunity to dig it claws into the government. This is a quote representing evil. I think it is pertinent to the Communist Party:
“I am hunger. I am thirst. I can fast for a hundred years and not die. I can lie a hundred nights on the ice and not freeze. I can drink a river of blood and not burst. Show me your enemies. What you hate so will we, no one hates better than us.”
-From the move “Prince Caspian”
Very hard to say, if there is a coherence between US imperialism and brewing protest at russian side. Hopefully the new administration will do something on imperialism. Russia is expected to do on protest, what they are doing for decades, if not centuries.
‘the world of imperialism is starting to die’
Zyuganov must be dreaming!!!!!!!!!
the commies were the epitome of imperialism during the height of their power.. hypocrisy and socialism have been married since birth..
Interesting how their proposed solution to economic trouble is the same as ours, Billions in bail outs. This is to make the economies limp on for long enough so the “masses” will give them the reins to return to socialism. Let us rise above the feeding frenzy of Collectivism. The best solution for our economies is allow the consequences of poor decisions or fraud to teach the needed lessons of the hard knocks. We get knocked down but the wise learn and get back up and learn again. There is value in creativity. The creative use obstacles as stepping stones. When limits are found the creative find solutions. Let us get to the drawing board and build.
Zyuganov’s statement that “We have to squeeze everything we can from this situation” in order to regain communist power reminds me of the Obama administration’s belief that they should ‘never let a crisis go to waste’. And they’ve certainly made good on that philosophy so far. It is disturbing, but not surprising, that our present administration is united in principle with the Russian communists in their transmutation of schadenfreude into political gain.
